Brothers Conflict Passion Pink: Kaname, Hikaru, and Masaomi

We are back already with the third and final article about Brothers Conflict Passion Pink! Make sure you check out parts one and two if you haven’t and strap in for some REALLY questionable age gaps! This go around, I focused on the three oldest brothers available in this game. Because I had really seen almost all of the events by now, these routes went by a lot faster. I also allowed myself some agency when it came to scheduling. Previously I followed guides really strictly in an attempt to ensure that I got certain ends and all the CGs, and if you read part two you know how that turned out.

I’ll be honest and say that I’ve kind of given up on CG completion for this game. I don’t know if the fan translation bugged out some endings or if it’s just really difficult to unlock some endings due to how affection levels are affected by RNG. However, I’d rather not make myself crazy about it. Maybe I’ll try again one day with an unpatched version to try and narrow down what the problem is.

I found giving myself a bit more freedom when it came to scheduling made the whole game a lot more enjoyable. Which in hindsight, is probably obvious! I looked up the likes and dislikes for each character, took into account the amount of family affection I needed for each ending, and balanced Ema’s stress levels and money. It’s almost like that’s how they intended for you to play the game! Unfortunately I’m absolutely neurotic. Letting go of guides was not easy.

I was excited for Kaname’s route from his interactions in the main events, just to see how far the game would go. Kaname is the 3rd son of the Asahina family, 27 years old, and a Buddhist Monk/Priest. My image of Monks is bald and celibate. Two things that Kaname is decidedly not. I actually did a bit of research about Japanese Buddhist monks and the short of it is that during particularly difficult times in history, Japanese Buddhist monks kind of threw out a lot of the rules that more traditional monks follow. They’re not considered real “monks” by other Buddhist sects, but priests. This translation uses monk and priest interchangeably. Kaname is bleach blonde and loves to flirt with just about every cute girl he comes across, underage stepsisters included. Don’t get me wrong, I liked this route a lot, but that man is a predator. I decided long ago that we’re not taking this game that seriously, though. We’re rolling with it.

I don’t think he hates admitting it at all, actually.

Spoilers for Kaname’s Route

Wataru knows your sins.

Like Tsubaki, Kaname is pretty open with his affections from the start. Ema doesn’t take him seriously and I don’t really blame her. Her brothers warn her that he’s a playboy and tends to spend the night at his exclusively female parishioner’s houses for… spiritual reasons. He offers to show Ema what he means but Tsubaki warns her that he just uses pick-up lines. A big shocker is that Kaname kisses Ema really early on in his route! While on a family vacation to the beach, he steals a kiss from her. She’s extremely affected by this and can’t act normal around him for a few weeks, purposefully ignoring him. They have a heart to heart and agree to get along again as siblings to which Kaname agrees to “for now.” But in the future, will they stay just siblings? No, they won’t, we know where this is going.

CG image of Kaname pulling Ema into a kiss while they sit in shallow water.

Kaname continues his flirtatious assault and slowly Ema’s heart begins to waver. There was quite a steamy scene when Ema spends the night in his room. (which is honestly a weird mechanic, it’s under the guise of her wanting to spend more time with her brothers or not being able to sleep, but I think Ema might just be the densest otome protagonist I’ve ever experienced.) Kaname puts the moves on her aggressively, pinning her to the bed and kissing her neck. He stops when she protests, still insisting they are just siblings.

CG image ofKaname kissing Ema's neck on his bed, with Ema visibly blushing.

Kaname shows his serious side in his other events. He discusses how his work as a monk affects him and is actually quite sincere, gentle, and kind. He just loves to flirt! The climax of this route is where Ema sees Kaname on what she assumes is a date! With another woman! Why is she so upset about this? He’s just her older brother, right? Two weeks later, she overhears Tsubaki yelling at Kaname in his room. It was nice to hear him absolutely lay into him for playing with Ema’s feelings and dating other women behind her back. Kaname doesn’t take this lying down, and insists he’s serious about her.

Kaname comes out of the room, realizes Ema heard everything, and the pair go on a drive. Turns out, that was a girl he used to date but he was breaking it off with her when Ema saw them. He tells her that he loves her, only her, and won’t hand her over to anyone else. He knows she might not believe his feelings just yet, but Ema tells him to make her believe him. They make out in his car, and the screen fades to black.

In the epilogue, I was SHOCKED to see that Kaname cut his hair! He stopped bleaching it! He quit being a monk! He’s working at his mother’s company! He’s cleaned up his act! He picks up Ema from her high school graduation with his new look and a bouquet of roses. We end with a funny morning-after scene where Kaname picks up Ema’s phone and Ukyo (another brother) freaks out at the implications.

Kaname and Ema cuddling on the bed with Ema asleep. Kaname's hair is notably darker.
Peep the much more natural hair color and a little bit of boob!

In any real life scenario, Kaname would be someone I avoid at all costs. Also, he has a weird early 2000s Japanese pretty boy mullet for most of the route. But I guess I like the brothers more when they’re aggressive? We learn more about ourselves everyday, I suppose. The CGs were great and I liked seeing all of the different sides of Kaname. I don’t think he tops Tsubaki as my favorite, but I had a lot of fun playing through his route. I found a healthy amount of humor in Kaname’s antics even if they were questionable at best and a cancellable offense at worst.

Hikaru is one of two “secret brothers” that don’t live in the large condominium with the rest of the family. You’re not introduced to him until late November, and for some context the game starts and ends in May. You’re also not able to get his endings until you’ve beaten the game at least once. Hikaru is the fourth son, 27 years old, and is usually crossdressing. When you first meet him, Ema assumes that he’s Kaname’s girlfriend. The excuse is that he cross-dresses to gather information for his work as a novelist. I mean, sure I guess? I’m pretty sure he also just likes it, and I mean, good for him. One interesting quirk of this route is how the correct answers on his dates change depending on if he’s dressed up as a woman or a man. You also can only spend time with him on Sundays because he doesn’t live with the rest of the family making it a little more of a challenge. I thankfully didn’t have any trouble unlocking his events or ending by just avoiding the other brothers who have routes in Passion Pink. For instance, I hung out with Ukyo and Wataru who only have events and endings in Brilliant Blue. You can raise their affection without worrying about messing up your event flags.

Spoilers for Hikaru’s Route

I was curious how this route would play out because it’s not everyday you have a cross-dressing love interest in an otome game! Unfortunately, I think he got the short end of the stick by being introduced so late in the game. His second event is at Christmas, where we experience his male persona for the first time. Ema can’t recognize him and wonders why this strange man is calling out to her. She also asks why he’s dressed like that, to which he responds that he actually prefers dressing in male clothing and only dresses as a woman for work. I’m still skeptical. He is very handsome in men’s clothes though! They spend Christmas Eve together and Hikaru remarks that if he tells his brothers they’ll probably go insane with jealousy.

Ema and Hikaru, who is dressed in men's clothing, lighting a pink candle, both are smiling.

Their interactions revolve around Hikaru interviewing Ema to get information for his novels and experience her genuine, high school girl reaction to various scenarios. Some of these scenarios include him flirting with her in different ways, imitating some of the other brothers like Yusuke and Louis. You also learn that he writes psychological thriller crime novels with morally gray protagonists, which made me question why he needed information from a high school girl or to cross-dress as a woman, but eh.

I feel like I need to mention that Hikaru is adamant that he is a straight male through and through. Ema actually asks if he identifies more as a woman or if he likes men more, and he’s a bit offended. During their sleepover scenes, he makes sure Ema knows that he’s a man and not actually a kind older sister. Ema is falling for him at this point, however the CGs were incredibly similar throughout every event. He would interview her at his house and tease Ema causing her to blush. Over half the images were just then sitting there with different expressions and slightly different poses.

Entire CG gallery for Hikaru's route in Brothers Conflict. A lot of the CGs are incredibly similar with little variation.
I wouldn’t usually show the entire CG gallery, but I think it’s important to show how CGs three through seven are basically the same.

We did get a super cute casual sprite for him that you see in ONE scene though! Look at him! He’s overworked and behind on his manuscripts like all novelists in Japanese media are.

Sprite of Hikaru in a different outfit and hairstyle. He's wearing a gym uniform and has his hair in long braids.

Ema realizes her feelings and gets upset that Hikaru only sees her as a source of information and doesn’t actually have feelings for her. Or does he? Of course he does! One big surprise making a short route even shorter is that the last TWO MONTHS are skipped. After Ema gets upset with Hikaru and stops visiting him, they don’t see each other for two months!! You don’t schedule anything or have any events, it’s a pure time skip. Ema receives a package from Hikaru that contains a magazine with his latest work. It’s a romance extremely different from his previous writings, about a man who interviews a girl and slowly falls in love with her.

This, of course, is actually his true feelings for Ema. He locked himself away for a month to properly express them. Awww!! The epilogue is an event celebrating Hikaru’s success as an author. He was really bold, telling Ema he reserved the penthouse suite on the top floor to keep her away from the other brothers and for her to be prepared for him to take off her dress tonight. Also, it turns out he dresses as a woman because it’s easier to get information out of morally corrupt individuals and criminals to use in his novels. That feels waaay more dangerous than it could be worth.

Hikaru holding Ema's wrist against the wall while their foreheads touch.

I was disappointed with the CGs in this route. They were incredibly same-y all throughout the middle of this already condensed route. Hikaru really never seemed genuine with his feelings until the very end. Maybe it’s not supposed to be a full-fledged route and more of a secret little surprise? Hikaru deserved a bit more character development and more vulnerable moments with Ema. I was able to play through this route super quickly, and overall it left me with a moderately positive opinion.

We have arrived at the final brother available in Passion Pink. Masaomi is the first son of the Asahina family coming in at 31 years old. He holds the extremely respectable profession of pediatrician and acts as a de facto parental figure to Wataru, the youngest brother in the family. I saved this route for last because I was the most excited for it. Why? Well, how do I put this delicately… I love old men. I think otome games need more old men. Masaomi isn’t even old, but he’s the oldest here and I’ll take what I can get. I also enjoy age gaps in romance because I guess I’m just a little freak! Anyway, Masaomi didn’t exactly deliver on this but he was cute. He has a bit of a baby face, loves candy, and absolutely can’t stand the sight of blood. Wait huh? Isn’t he a pediatrician? Yeah, we will get to that.

Spoilers for Masaomi’s Route

Masaomi’s first few events showcase his kindness as a pediatrician and how family oriented he is. He really cares about his brothers and became a pediatrician so he could better take care of them. It doesn’t really come off like their mother and late father did much parenting after Masaomi was old enough to take care of the younger brothers but he also doesn’t seem to mind. The first few scenes involve Dr. Asahina at the hospital and then taking care of Ema when she’s sick, including showing him her stomach!! Scandalous… She accidentally raises her sweatshirt up too high and shows him a bit of her bra. Masaomi is shuffled off to a marriage interview because his mom thinks it’s time for him to get married. Kaname, Wataru, and Ema  spy on it and Masaomi turns her down, mentioning he likes someone already.

Masaomi keeps a stuffed rabbit named Usa-Tan in his lab coat to comfort upset children at the hospital. Usa-Tan is very functional! Turns out he has secret pockets, a calculator, notepad, and more built in. Masaomi has Usa-Tan Model 00 and Wataru has Usa-Tan 01. For Christmas, Masaomi gives Ema Usa-Tan 02! A few weeks later, Wataru tells Ema that she should check all the pockets on Usa-Tan because again, he has a lot of functions. She finds a beautiful necklace adorned with pink hearts tucked inside a pocket, realizing her feelings for Masaomi. Aww!

Masaomi giving Ema a Christmas Gift, a yellow stuffed rabbit.

Disaster strikes when Wataru attempts to retrieve some plates from a raised cabinet. The plates shatter and seriously injure Wataru’s arm. The family grabs Masaomi to help but the sight of blood makes him faint. Now he’s passed out on the floor, with only Ema able to snap him out of it enough for him to use his training to put pressure on the wound and stop the bleeding. He passes out again as soon as Wataru is in the ambulance though, prompting them to take him to the hospital as well.

Wataru is stitched up and no worse for wear, but Masaomi has to stay a bit longer and finish his IV fluids. He’s pretty embarrassed that he wasn’t able to take care of his family because of his fear of blood as that was the entire reason for becoming a doctor.

Soon we are at the confession scene. Masaomi has been coming home super late from the hospital looking pale and exhausted. Ema stays up to cook for him, and it turns out he’s been staying late at work to watch surgeries and get over his fear of blood. That’s why he looks so ragged when he gets home. He tells Ema that she’s not his family or sister, which is an awful way to express that you want her to your girlfriend. But that’s what he’s getting at. He wants to become stronger and a fitting man to be with her. He also admits he turned down the marriage interview because he was worried he’d never see Ema again. Him using the word “girlfriend” made him feel more like a schoolboy than a 31 year old man.

Ema and Masaomi embracing. Masaomi is much taller than Ema and the text "Hey, I love you..." is at the bottom.

I’m going to assume there’s a timeskip here but it’s not made explicit. But I’m assuming so because we jump to Ema and Masaomi getting married! All the brothers are in attendance and Yusuke, if you remember him from part one, is absolutely distraught. He’s so upset. It’s played for laughs as his little sprite zips across the screen crying but I felt so, so bad for him. Thankfully the wedding CG was absolutely lovely and it felt like a good ending!

Masaomi and Ema at their wedding ceremony.

The epilogue is what I hope and pray is another time skip, because now Ema is pregnant. God, I hope she at least graduated high school. I did warn you that Masaomi is very family oriented! Yusuke is even more upset by this. I’m glad the other endings didn’t focus on how depressed the other brothers are because it’s… pathetic. She’s about 3 months along and seems to be very happy with Masaomi and building a family together. The end!

Masaomi with his arm around Ema who is visibly pregnant. Their hands are on her stomach.

Possible teen bride and teenage pregnancy aside, Masaomi was a very stable, kind, and rational character which echoed throughout his story. He’s a very cute man which I wasn’t expecting! His CGs were nice and I really liked Masaomi’s sprites, he had a lot of fun expressions including being dressed up as Santa once. He’s sadly not old enough to have wrinkles, so he’s really not the old man I wanted, but it was a very pleasant way to wrap up the game.

Even though I’m missing eight CGs and a bunch of family events, I’m calling it here. I don’t think there’s a guide specific enough to take me through every single thing I’m missing and wonder if some events are even possible to get with the patched version. I don’t have it in me to grind out every last thing. I’m happy enough that I got all of the route-specific CGs and love endings.

 Huh?

 What?

 There’s a HAREM ENDING?

This ending actually branches from Hikaru’s route and involves getting every brother’s affection up juuuust enough but not so much that you enter their specific storyline. I had everyone at one or two hearts, which was enough to trigger it. It introduced me to the “family date” function that I completely ignored throughout the rest of the game. These are short scenes where Ema asks a random brother if the whole family wants to go out together, to which they agree. You only interact with two or three brothers on these “family dates” and I’m not even sure if the choices raise affection with anyone at all. I assume it slightly raises your affection with everyone, regardless of the choices you make. It seems like there’s a lot of content buried in there that you normally don’t see as you really want to focus on going on dates with one specific character for all of the other endings!

Spoilers for Harem Ending

Sadly, harem is a bit of a misnomer here. In this ending, Tsubaki and Azusa distract Ema with video games until Wataru comes in with a blindfold. They guide her to the living room, where all of the brothers have planned a party to celebrate her one year anniversary of joining the family. Yeah, not really a harem, at least not romantically. I don’t know what I was expecting. But, it was really sweet as Ema thought about each brother and mentioned what she liked about them. There’s a great CG, and I was so relieved that I was actually able to trigger this ending. When Ema realizes she’s adopted, she struggles a bit feeling like she’s completely alone in the world. It was great for her to see how loved she really is. Can you believe I was able to trigger all of the events and endings this time? Thank god!

The entire Asahina Family from Brothers Conflict celebrating Ema being in the family.

So yeah, I’m missing eight CGs (mostly in the family category) and didn’t see all of the events. I’m a huge completionist when it comes to visual novels so this is new for me. It just feels overwhelming to try and go back through and unlock everything at this point, and I don’t have it in me. I won’t say I never will, but definitely not right now. Did I like Brothers Conflict: Passion Pink? Oh yeah absolutely! It was a very different and interesting experience with the schedule system instead of periodic choices being the main mechanism to raise affection. The little chibis when you did activities with the entire family or a specific character were really cute.

However, when you are going back through your 3rd or 4th route, the scheduling is tedious and the constant scene skipping takes longer than I’d like. I was always excited when I unlocked a new scene, especially family scenes. The interactions were memorable, well written, and fleshed out their relationships in natural ways. Do I recommend that you play Brothers Conflict: Passion Pink? Ehh…

It’s not exactly easy to get your hands on it and play it in English. You need a hacked Vita, a copy of the game, and the ability to install the English fan translation patch. That alone makes it pretty daunting for the average gamer who isn’t dedicated to otome games. If you are, however, it’s such an interesting piece of otome history in a way. It is incredibly popular in Japan and one of the most successful otome titles spawning not only these games, but a manga and anime (with two seasons)! I’d be interested in reading the original light novel some day, but it’s not a priority.

I’m taking a Brothers Conflict break at this point. I don’t have it in me to play Brilliant Blue and tackle the rest of the Asahina family right now. I’m brother-ed out. The games are incredibly similar, having the same shared main story events, and man. I just don’t feel like it. I will get to it though, but for now we’re putting it on the shelf.

Thank you for taking this journey with me and hopefully not being too scandalized by the very concept of dating your step brothers. If you’re curious, I started up even if: Tempest as my next otome title!

Now, please enjoy a few more in-game screenshots. I took a lot of them this time around! I’ll see you next time!
